After hours and hours of investigation and dead ends, I discovered that it is the Font Awesome plugin that causes Elementor and Elementor Pro editors to grey screen. Why, I do not know! Disabled the plugin and my site works fine again. There are many ways of integrating Font Awesome into WordPress. This plugin is one of them. Elementor has its own way, which does not involve this plugin and is not compatible with this plugin (as of now, to my knowledge). Elementor users are successfully using Font Awesome with Elementor apart from this plugin, though there are trade-offs between the way their integration works, and the way this plugin works. Elementor users should not attempt to install this plugin unless or until Elementor or Font Awesome recommends how that can be done successfully.

There are many ways of integrating Font Awesome into WordPress. This plugin is one of them.
