I also have been looking all over the net trying all kinds of plugins and hacks to get this to work. I’ve come the closest with yours so far. When I activated it and updated all users, that worked. When a register a new user and login, and then go to my profile and update it, that works as well. I am also using the User Profiles Made Easy Widget and if I register and then edit the profile through that it doesn’t update it. However, when new users just register it still displays the username.
